Dust extraction for dust-free sanding

Today, health and safety issues are becoming more and more important. Sanding tools and abrasives are made more and more efficient, with a focus on dust-free applications. This development places higher requirements on the dust extractors.

Your health and well-being are paramount – if you can see dust then you’re definitely breathing in dust, which can lead to many serious lung illnesses and diseases.

 

Different Dust Class and Filtration

There are three main classes of dust extraction on the market currently; L, M and H Class. The official wording of the differences are as follows

 

Class L – (low risk) use for soft woods and solid surface material such as Corian.

Class M – (medium risk) use for hard woods, board materials, concrete and brick dust.

Class H – (high risk) Use for highly carcinogenic dusts, asbestos, formaldehyde, mould, germs and bacteria.

 

Dust Class L

For professional users who only vacuum low-risk dust such as household dust, soil or sand, sanding dust from softwood or solid surfaces (such as Corian).

The occupational exposure limit for this kind of dust is > 1 mg/m3.

The dust extractor must be able to retain 99% of the dust.

L class dust extractors may not be used for:

• Hazardous dust with OEL values < 1 mg/m3
• Hot materials (burning cigarettes, hot ash, etc.)
• Flammable, explosive, aggressive liquids (e.g. petrol, solvents, acids, alkalis etc.)
• Flammable, explosive dust (e.g. magnesium or aluminium dust etc.)

 

Dust Class M

Dust Class M (medium risk).

For professional users within collision repair, construction, and woodworking that sand for instance hardwood, plaster, putty, latex and oil paints, etc. that cause medium risk dust.

The occupational exposure limit (OEL) for this kind of dust is > 0.1 mg/m3 .

This means that the dust extractor must be able to retain 99.9% of the dust. The air flow has to be minimum Vmin = 20 m/s in the suction hose.

M class dust extractors may not be used for:

• Hazardous dust with OEL values < 0.1 mg/m3
• Hot materials (burning cigarettes, hot ash, etc.)
• Flammable, explosive, aggressive liquids (e.g. petrol, solvents, acids, alkalis etc.)
• Flammable, explosive dust (e.g. magnesium or aluminium dust etc.)

 

 

Mirka Dust Extractors have been tested to meet the requirements of each dust class according to IEC 60335-2-69 (worldwide) and by EN 60335-2-69 (European wide) standards. Further health and safety regulations may apply in different countries.

A compact but still high performing L-class dust extractor, with proven performance for user protection and easy to move around. This dust extractor has a blow function, to blow off surfaces and to clean hard to reach areas. The container size is 25l and the dust extractor is equipped with a carrying handle. The 5m cord is also an optimal length for a compact dust extractor. The Push&Clean filter cleaning system enables a longer life time and better suction. This dust extractor is equipped with an AutoStart function that saves time and electricity for the user. Professional L-class dust extractor has a high-performance motor and turbine, which creates 250 mbar vacuum and 4500 l/min air flow. The AutoStart function increases the lifetime of the motor and reduces noise. This extractor features a flat top with space for storage and large wheels for better manoeuvrability. It has hose and cable storage for more comfortable transportation. A fleece dust bag is also included. Mirka Dust Extractors are suitable for both dry and wet applications (remove the dust bag before wet use and clean filter before and after wet use).
